During my recent holiday I bought 2 Murakami books- sputnik sweetheart and the elephant vanishes. It is unfortunate that I have yet to immerse myself in these books, the reason being has been that I have been to preoccupied with reading my social science text and some library borrowed books. It was only last week when I came across and finished reading my very first Murakami, After Dark.
I saw this book near my reserved books without a name and a reserved tag, next thing I know I was already only chapter 4. The book isn’t thick unlike most of Murakami’s work (a fact I’ve known through research).
The book is set out during the witching hours of Tokyo from between midnight to dawn. It centers on the relationship between the two Asai sisters- Eri and Mari. The story directs as towards Mari sitting at Denny’s reading a book, no later she is then approached by Takahashi who seems to know her through their relationship with Mari’s sister. Later, when Takahashi left for practice she is approached by Kaoru, a love ho manager who needs who her help in communicating with a Chinese prostitute…
Without divulging to much- Murakami shows different facets of the human psychology; the interrelationship between human memory and perspective. Murakami’s After Dark creatively and seamlessly explores a human’s understanding of existence through the interplay of observation and the scope of compassion and love.
I experienced the book as if I was inside the cinema, eagerly and patiently awaiting the unfolding of the story- one observes, feels and interprets the way they understand about the situation.
Mari: I don’t stand a chance if you compare me to her. I’m little, my boobs are small, my hair’s kinky, my mouth is too big and Im near sighted and astigmatic.
Karu (laughs) : People usually call stuff like that individuality.
