The story revolves around Nanase Hita who works as a maid, hence the title. Nanase can read peoples mind, she uses this gift to ‘spy’/know more about the family she works for. 7 chapters, 7 families- it looks at the different structure and relationships of an average Japanese family.
This book was definitely an easy read, it gives us an insight on a variety of family issues most of which are directed towards ego, infidelity and an unacknowledged family member.
Seeing as the maid was initially published in 1972, I find it interesting that family themes during the 70s resonates to the issues families experience nowadays.
The grass is not always greener on the other side…
‘To a third party without telepathic powers, the large household would probably seemed the picture of a “wholesome” family. Even if one could perceive that this harmony was superficial, no one could have noticed any difference between this night’s meal and all the other dinners up until now. But Nanase could tell that a major change place in the Jimba family’s collective consciousness. Nanase has exposed something hidden in their subconscious: the family’s filth.’
